About Us

The LNS Arts & Culture Guild is a vision developed by Ana Osborne, of the Netagamiou Community Learning Centre, Adrienne Blattel, of the Quebec-Labrador Foundation and Marie Anderson, of Tourisme & Culture Chevery. The goal is to create an interdisciplinary group of artists of all mediums, open to members all across the Lower North Shore. The Guild would promote networking and mutual learning among professional and amateur artists, and appreciation of art among community members. It would permit local artists to share the responsibility of organizing arts-based programming for residents of the Lower North Shore, contributing to arts education, as well as the arts and culture based tourism industry. The Guild will work to facilitate existing efforts to develop an artists' network, and to celebrate the remarkable artistic talent along the Coast.

Goals of the Guild

While the Guild remains in its preliminary stages, there are some clear goals of this proposed network, both short- and long-term:

  • Hold monthly meetings for members that include artist demonstrations, planning for upcoming events or workshops, and newsletter content development, among other things.
  • Hold workshops on a regular basis that are open to the public, that are focused on art education and technical instruction.
  • Publish a newsletter on a bi-monthly basis that publicizes arts-based events or programming in the region, as well as shows off some of the work of members.
  • Develop satellite galleries within the region, with 'floating exhibits' of members' work. This means that community gathering places(libraries, schools, restaurants, etc.) would become places to display community artwork, and even to sell artworks. These exhibits could also travel throughout the region, thereby exposing other Lower North Shore communities to the arts community.
  • Participate in regional festivals, approximately 3-4 per year.
  • Develop a website which fits the needs of the Guild, displays members' work, and provides links to members' individual websites.
  • Contribute to the planning of Chevery's 2010 Festival for the Arts, Conference & Trade Show (July 26-31, 2010).
  • Contribute to the planning of a sustainable artist-in-residence program for the Lower North Shore.

Upcoming Activities

The first Arts & Culture Guild meeting was held on December 4th, 2009 courtesy of the LNS CEDEC. The meeting took place via telephone conference, so as to include as many people as possible. This meeting was open to anyone interested in arts & culture as a means of creative expression; promoting and preserving the LNS culture and heritage; community development; and economic development.

A directory of Guild members is currently being compiled and will be available on this site shortly. The directory is designed to take stock of the artistic talent and resources available on the Coast, and to encourage partnerships between artists and their surrounding communities.
