CoastFest 2008

We Need Volunteers!

Please visit Coast Fest 2008 for more information or read on:

Come follow in the footsteps of the explorers during the summer-long event called CoastFest 2008 that coincides with Quebec City’s 400th anniversary. Events in each village will include re-enactments, art shows, village festivals and traditional craft demonstrations.

2008 will be an exciting year on Quebec's Lower North Shore. The Coast will be celebrating from village to village during an event called CoastFest in 2008. Mark it in your calendar! Through various festivities and cultural events in 2008, follow in the footsteps of the explorers and discover the captivating culture and history of this region. CoastFest 2008 will include village celebrations, traditional skills demonstrations, re-enactments, exhibitions and much more.

CoastFest 2008 will coincide with the 400th anniversary of the founding of Quebec City by famous explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1608. North America’s European explorers passed by the Lower North Shore before sailing up the St. Lawrence River - this is why we will be celebrating too. In addition, learn about the mysterious lost port of Brest on the Coast. Described by Jacques Cartier in 1534, this important place name appears on the earliest maps of North America before disappearing without a trace. It was named for the city of Brest in France, where an International Festival of the Sea will be taking place in 2008. All the more reason to celebrate the fascinating culture and international history of the Coast in 2008!

What we have planned

There will be a travelling show visiting each community along the coast throughout the summer starting in the Municipality of Blanc Sablon during the week of June 21st to 28th. From that point, it will move up the coast a week at a time, one community at a time. (Dates for these events can be found on the The Coast Fest 2008 web page)

During one week, each community will have the opportunity to have a small team of young helpers, comprised of theatre, art and cultural studies students. These young people will be stationed in your town and will be there to assist with -become a part of- the festivities. Their job will be to help you, the community, run or help out with the events planned. This small team can put on a play, help you develop an exhibit or a display or help teach visitors about the area.
