The Island of Gros Isle (Gros Mecatina)

Description

The island of Gros Isle is located in the gulf of Saint Lawrence approximately 5 km off of the coast from La Tabatiere. The island is currently uninhabited, but families have lived on the island for extended periods of time, and several fishing camps have been located there. The island may have also been inhabited by vikings at one point in timne, according to the St. Lawrence Gateways project:

There were also a couple of bird santuaries created in 1996 on islands just outiside of Gros Isle on islands of flat island, Treble Hill, and Murre Rocks. These islands are categorized as comprehensive conservation, with no public access.

In addition toCommon Murres the islands also include The Atlantic Puffin, the Black Guillemot, the Razorbill, the Great Black-backed Gull, the Herring Gull and tern species form small colonies on the Sanctuary's islands.
