Heritage preservation programFrom Lower North Shore[edit] Built Heritage Preservation ProgramThe Lower North Shore's architecture is an important aspect of our culture and is what distinguishes us from the rest of the province. Theses structures have many stories to share and are of great historical value. From boat slips and fishing stages to houses and churches, buildings on the "Coast" are built proof of the many generations that managed to live its rugged shoreline. Now that the fishing industry has declined, people either leave to work for months of the year or decide to leave indefinitely. This leaves houses and fisheries-related structures without any maintenance which then leads to deterioration. This has been going on for about thirty years now which brings us, the population of the Lower North shore, to a point where we have to take action. Therefore, the establishment of a Built Heritage Preservation Program will allow to make an inventory of what is left of these buildings. From there, each community will have to choose which buildings should be recognized and protected, and then establish a priority list for restoration. This long-term project aims to make the population aware of the importance of their built heritage and to get them to participate in the process of preservation. There is also the possibility of giving life to old structures by giving them another function (café, restaurant, art gallery, workshop, interpretation center, etc.). This will also contribute to the development of our tourism industry. The project is at an early stage but I wanted to make the people aware of my intentions. I am also hoping to catch the attention of a few interested "Coasters" willing to help in developing the project and applying it. Last but not the least, I wish to get entire population of the Lower North Shore to collaborate with me and for those who want to get involved, feel free to contact me.
