Lower North ShoreFrom Lower North Shore
[edit] Lower North Shore (Basse-Côte-Nord)The Lower North Shore of The Gulf of Saint Lawrence, consists of villages, starting from Kegaska (Kegashka) in the west, to Blanc Sablon on the border with Labrador in the East. The region has a rich history, and people have been living in the region for thousands of years starting with the Maritime Archaic People eight thousand years ago, and the Inuit seven hundred years ago. It is also believed that Vikings may have lived on the Lower North Shore, in sites such as Gros Mecatina, near La Tabatiere and Hare Harbour on Petit Mecatina near Harrington Harbour. The Lower North Shore was also one of the first regions discovered by Jacques Cartier on his first visit to North America. Since Jacques Cartiers first visit, there have been temporary, and permanent fishing settlements on The Lower North Shore. Most of the modern Lower North Shore villages are located near the original fishing camps of the original European settlers to the region. [edit] Interactive Map[edit] Lower North Shore Villages
