From my research the town of Chevery was named for a Captain Cheverie who wrecked on the sand shoals in the late 1700s with a load of salt (probably for the cod fishery). I do not know his full name nor the name of his ship. The village of Chevery is very young from a community perspective. It was settled as a community in the 1960s and prior to that the Anderson family had a small govermnent funded experimental farm at the western end known as Cross River as early as 1935.

Thanks -great site - just wondered if anyone out there can fill me in on history of Town of Chevery and its link with the family name Detcheverry/Cheverie/Chevarie/Chavarie - that would be great -there is also teh town of Cheverie in Nova Scotia named after the same family - I descend from Antoine Detcheverry and Marie Pinet who lived on Isle St. Jean (PEI) before the 1758 Deportation

Im now in beautiful Old Fort Bay, he first village on the eastern road sector.. What a fantastic setting here in the hills. its like la la land with the snow on the mountains, the islands and gushing water streams coming down the mountain. its an amazingly unique part of the shore all the way to the labrador border, many people are helpful here, and care about each other.. Im doing a pottery and mural making workshop here with the elementary and secondary chool children of old fort and st . pauls schools, its an amazing project and we will soon inslall our 5 X 3 foot relief, and scraffito painted slip mural in the schools. some nice raku coil pots to done by the children , slab and pinch pots too with copper lusters and crackle surface decoration.. We have been blessed by the C.L.D. and local mayors who have supported this project for fine arts.. hey are we moving forward or what ,, unbelievable.. a government and people who care... if we can accentuate, elevate, and exhibit our coast and beauty....and what we have here then we are on the road to success, and lighting the torch for our children.... this is gods country and we must keep it that way... carry on Canada......and a merry christmas to all.....michael

Hi,

We had a major server crash recently, and we lost some of the recent information on the web page. If you made some recent updates to the web site, you may need to make the changes again. We are going to be making changes to the backups to try and prevent this from happening again in the future.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

thanks,

Hello everyone, well how wonderful it is to read all your stories. I agree with everyone... Shawn you are ingenious in your creation of this website! What a gift to those who love the Coast and a welcoming place for those who have yet to visit.

I am writing because I am wondering if any of you would be willing to share your reminiscing stories through the "Fond Memories of Home" section of the Chevery News Newspaper (see Local News in this website for examples). We have received such wonderful feedback about this section of the newspaper and so far we've had people write in from St. Paul's, Chevery, Tete-a-la-Baleine... so stories from Kegaska, La Romaine, Harrington Harbour, Aylmer Sound, Mutton Bay, La Tabatiere, St. Augustine, Old Fort, Blanc Sablon, and Lourdes would fill up many future issues! Please feel free to email me if you need more information. We love reading your stories!!!

In the spring of 1975, I was lucky enough to be granted a 7 week teaching job in Kegaska. It was a wonderful experience. I had 10 children in a Jr and Sr Kindergarten, in the basement of the school. The children were delightful. And the food . . . I remember starting to have stomach grumbles around 11:30, waiting to see what Mrs. Mansbridge would make for dinner. A goose was unlucky enough to land on the shore and it ended up as my birthday dinner. Duck, salmon, cod, salt beef, moose! My mouth is watering! The people were so welcoming. It is wonderful to have this website to revisit.
Just a funny story: I arrived on the first freighter after breakup at about 11:00 at night. Everyone was on the harbour and as I stepped onto the gangplank, everyone started to clap and cheer. It warmed my heart . . . but then, I realized that the first shipment of beer cases had been hoisted out of the hold! It put me right back in my place, where I belonged. Somehow, those beer cases were used as bookshelves in the basement of the school where my class was! I knew how fast they were being consumed as I had to rearrange my books many times over the course of the 6 weeks of teaching. Thanks for this opportunity to share!

Ian Crawford (Mutton Bay Teacher) 2008-05-10 @ 11:05:27
Good morning, everyone. As a result of this guestbook section I received great letters and pictures from three former students: Christine Vatcher, Donna Buffitt and Richard Organ. Because I was "computer incompetent" in sending their letters from my work to my home computer I lost Christine's and Donna's E-mail addresses. If you ladies see this note would you mind dropping me a quick line at crawilj@vianet.on.ca? (I still have Richard's info.)

I noticed a comment from Torri Mansbridge re: her dad Chris. Of course I remember him and think often of a couple of great years in Mutton Bay. I just scanned some classroom pictures and would be happy to send them along to anyone interested. These ones focus mostly on the first three students I heard from.

I hope everyone is having a super spring-time. Since I'm still teaching I can't help but add, "Yeah, only eight weeks to summer holidays!" I was never entirely sure that students realized that teachers liked holidays, too!

Bye for now. Anyone interested please feel free to drop me a line any time.

I have just finished browsing this site and I mostly certainly would like to congratulate those responsible for creating thelowernorthshore.com.
Fond memories were revived when I visited the page on the hockey tournament in St. Augustine and to think I was part of it 30 some years ago while coaching the Long Point team made my day thinking of all the great hockey talent on the LNS. Thanks Randy for flying us there safely in the slow but trusty Otter. Many, many Happy Years for this site!

Hi there!

First of all, I would like to say that I am not a Coaster, I'm from Sept-Iles. I travel to the coast once a year for my job. Each time, I am more and more impressed with the people I meet and awed by the beauty of the places I visit. I have met many good people in several places along the coast, whether it's Blanc-Sablon, St. Paul's, La Tabatière, St. Augustine or Chevery. These people always made me feel welcome and right at home, even though I was an outsider. I truly believe that the charm of the coast resides in its inhabitants and the history of its villages and towns.

I commend you on putting together this page that is a tribute to the Coasters and The Coast. Keep up the good work!

I look forward to visiting your beautiful region again soon, hopefully in the fall this time around!

Thank you Shawn.

The history of the Lower North Shore is unique as are the People. I am proud of our Region and community in which I live. I am sure that all persons who are from the Lower North Shore, who have worked or visited our beautiful region would agree. You cannot be of this place and not be affected by its magnetism and beauty in all types of weather.

Best regards to all.

Thanks to Ardella Buckle for sending me this site...
I love the peaceful life and sitting on a rock watching porpoises or makerel jumping out in the ocean sounds like a great way to spend the time alone or with someone...
Canada is such a big and beautiful country and we have so much to learn from each other...I have been to every province except Newfoundland.....and what a majestic country...not sure why ppl spend their money traveling to Europe and the warm Islands when there is so much history and beauty so close to home...
RE:The Art of Gold Studio..I want that teapot! love it...
Many thanks to Ardella for sharing this site...

Hi,

Like the site, it's nice to read about and see pictures of the coast. I am from St. Augustine and left in the early 80's. Any talk of finishing the highway? I would like to show my family the towns along the coast.

Hi Daren,

I added a link to your rink photo under the members section of the main photos page. You can click the photos link on the side of this page, or the link at the top of this post.

That is an amazing rink. You should have the Bullets and Raiders play a game on it.

Thanks for uploading the photo.
